Fighting Climate Change Through Wetland Protection

For the first time in this blog, I wanted to bring attention to a matter concerning the natural world. The prevalence and importance of wetlands and saltmarsh environments.

Considering the ongoing devastating effects of sea level rise around the world, efforts to protect the coast using natural based solutions have caught my attention.

Visiting a local saltmarsh environment, I was surprised to learn that saltmarshes are much more than what meets the eye. More than just land consisting of deep mud, water and vegetation, these environments are worthy of attention and should be protected in communities around the world. Saltmarshes provide an important habitat for a diverse range of birds, rabbits and other species. Crucially, they provide high flood defence and even act as regulators of the Earth's climate through Carbon intake. Their persistence, however, is threatened primarily by human land use development and sea level rise, if they're unable to grow at a similar rate.
